Lumbar spinal stenosis

Hello. I'm 23 and have had a bad back with crazy back pain since I was 8. I was going to a chiropractor about the beginning of high school and he told me I had DDD. Well I then moved, and he stopped taking my insurance, so a few years later i finally found a new chiropractor. He wanted X-rays done. So when he got them back he said I don't have DDD, I have scoliosis and that's all he could tell was wrong. I finally got my doctor to order me a thing to get an MRI, done because by then the pain was getting worse. When I got my results from my MRI back, my doc said I have bulging discs, arthritis as well as spinal stenosis all in the lumbar area,. So I started seeing a pain management doctor about a year and a half ago, and I've been on a crap ton of medications, and still taking them. My doc just recently switched me from Vicodin to morphine, and I can say that it sucks. But I could have a tolerance built up too and that's why I doesn't help that much. Lately the pain has been excruciating, on the urge of some days I just wanna go to the hospital because it's so bad, and the pins and needles in my legs and feet have been getting worse. I don't go back to my pain management dr for another 3 weeks or so. I've gone through physical therapy a few years ago, and like I mentioned, I'm on all kinds of medicine. Nothing is working anymore and I'm running out of options. Does anyone have any suggestions? Or is going through something similar? Surgery recommendations? I mean I know I'm young, but I give myself til I'm 30, and I won't be able to walk. I don't know what to do anymore

Hi, MommaBear13--thank you for taking the time to post about your back pain experience. We are so sorry to read about the long journey you've had with pain. We have some resources to share that we hope will be helpful to you as you weigh your treatment options.

First, we hear a lot from people who are struggling with pain medications. It can be a huge struggle: Sometimes, it seems like medications are the best way to non-surgically manage pain. But, there are some other options. We saw that you've gone through PT, but what about regular exercise? We know that sounds crazy when you're in pain, but this article covers some excellent information about why exercise is so important when you have spinal stenosis: ( Exercises for Spinal Stenosis ).

And, for some simple exercises you can do at home, these videos demonstrate some that are specifically designed for people with spinal stenosis: ( Video Series: Exercises for Lumbar Spinal Stenosis ). Of course, you should get your doctor's approval before starting a new exercise regimen.

You mention that it might be time to consider surgery. We have some information about that, too: ( Surgery for Spinal Stenosis ). But, please know that spine surgery may not completely eliminate your pain. Your very young and those meds are no joke. The possibility of liver damage or needing dyalisis for your kidneys in a few years should be motivation enough to find alternative ways to manage your pain. Im with most when it comes to surgeries which can be avoided with other means of adjusting to your new spinal relity. Pain meds is just one avenue which should be travelled very carefully with a plan to minimize their need.
