pain
I am scheduled for spinal fusion in may after reading some of the comments I'm even more afraid than I was. The intent for this surgery is to relieve the pain not make it worse.

Hi Sandy - actually the intent of spinal fusion is to stabilize the spine not pain relief. Success rates vary depending on many factors including which area of the spine is operated on. I understand the rate of success for cervical fusion is over 90% while lumbar fusion is much less.
Sandy, there’s nothing to be afraid of. I have a plate and 8 screws in the front of my neck and in 2017, I ended up with a hangman’s fracture which required rods and more screws. Just remember, take care of yourself and do exactly what the doctor says. Don’t over do it. You will be fine.
