L3/4 Disc Herniation + Spondylolisthesis in same area - surgery only option?

Started by andy_d on 11/18/2014 4:44pm

Hi. I'm a 37 year old male who has had issues with low back pain for many years but's only been the last twelve months that it got worse. Main issues that I have are with walking and standing where I start to feel pain in my lower right gluteal and / or my knee starts to stiffen up. Lately, I've been able to walk and stand longer than I have mostly because of training.

I just got done speaking to a second surgeon and like the first he feels like I should consider surgery.

He mentioned two procedures - one for fusion and one less invasive. The latter he said has a low chance of it being helpful but faster recovery.

It was a major blow to hear another surgeon say just now that I need surgery.

Is it really the only option? Will therapy / training just manage the pain but return if I stop?
