Dr. Bernard completed his neurosurgery residency training at Duke University in Durham, North Carolina in 1990. He spent the next 14.5 years practicing neurosurgery and training neurosurgeons at the university of North Carolina - Chapel Hill. As a professor at UNC he advanced to the position of Division Head of Neurosurgery and Director of the Neurosurgery residency training program. His sub-specialty interests are in minimally invasive surgery of the spine and spine artificial disc replacement surgery.
